Project Overview

Ticker is a mobile ticketing app that allows you to buy and sell tickets to events easily online. Ticker strives to be the most convenient, accessible, accommodating ticketing app. They offer a wide spectrum of ticket options from mobile, print, will call, and more. Ticker targets users such as musicians and performers, who need a platform to sell tickets to their event, as well as dedicated fans, who want to purchase tickets.

The Goal

Design an app that allows users to buy and sell tickets to their events from their phone, without having to buy and sell physical tickets.

The Problem

Busy musicians, performers, and fans and lack the time necessary to buy and sell physical tickets.

Adapt to both fans and musicians

  1. Musicians often work many jobs, so it is hard for them to find time to sell tickets, promote, and manage all orders for their shows.
  2. Text heavy pages are often hard to read and can be confusing. When purchasing a ticket, the fans want short, detailed info on the event they plan to attend.
  3. Some musicians interviewed do not like technology, so it’s important to note what we can do to simplify their experience.

Aimed at making musicians lives easier

As a musician myself, these are all ideas I have thought about throughout the years of selling tickets, touring, playing shows, promoting to an audience, etc. As a way make sure we get enough voices heard in the community, I opened up discussion to even more musicians and fans of music fans. During the discovery phase I wanted to forecast what assumptions I was correct on, and what else I could find to create the best Ticker app.

Quantitative Research

I conducted interviews with 10 users, where I then created empathy maps to understand the users I'm designing for and their needs where gained some key insights:

  • A primary user group identified through research was that it was hard for musicians to sell their own tickets to an event via a ticketing app.
  • This user group confirmed initial assumptions about musicians and what they look for from a ticketing app, but research also revealed that more control over their events.
  • We now know that our target audience is mostly made up of men and women aged 18-40.

Armed with this information, we can now start to produce an MVP our target audience will love. We can also start to tailor our marketing efforts to reach this audience more effectively.

Created personas based on our research. From our research we chose to focus primarily on the musician persona as well as music fans and concert-goers.

Once I had my main steps down, I jumped into creating low fidelity wireframes which helped me further scope what needed to be adjusted for a final prototype.

Takeaways:

While designing the Ticker app, I learned that the first ideas for the app that I originally created are only the beginning of the process. Usability studies and peer feedback influenced each iteration of the app’s designs, and allowed me to create a final design that was super useful for many different end users.

• Conduct another round of usability studies to validate whether the pain points users experienced have been effectively addressed. • Conduct more user research to determine any new areas of need. • Conduct more research to other groups of non-related users to see if this is an application that can grab attention from not only musicians and fans, but those that regularly do not attend events at all as well.
